How Do You Find Time to Homeschool?

ASK DONNA:
This Weeks Question Answered:

Q: How do you find the time to homeschool? How many hours do you spend teaching every day?

A: It is easiest if one parent is committed to stay home with the children. In my case I'm fortunate that my husband works for one of the leading telecom companies that permits him to work from home. I create my schedule around my children's learning. I take responsibility for the hands-on work involved in their education, but my husband and I work closely with each other regarding the kids. Since he's home during the day we share really great lunches and don't have to wait until late evening to see him like we did when he drove to the office every day.

You're only limited by your own beliefs. I have seen families of all sizes successfully homeschool. Whether a single-parent at home, both parents work outside of the home or one parent works outside of the home and the other one works from home. They create a schedule and share responsibilities to make it work for their family. If you put the interest of the children first anything is possible. The beauty of homeschooling is that it is flexible and each family can make their own decisions based on their personal needs.

It only takes a couple of hours per day for younger children and approximately four hours for older children. That's the time they're teaching themselves. It takes only a fraction of my time. I'm there to provide and guide, then step aside. I let them do their work. If they need me, I'm always near. Many parents who have children enrolled in public schools spend 2, 3 or more hours per day helping their children with homework. Why should a child spend an 8 hour day away from home "learning" and then have to come home and spend another possible 3 hours on homework when it can all be done with superior results in a fraction of the time?
